Engineered hardwood is a solid oak veneer (less common, but also available in ash and walnut) on a layered or blocked ply-board backing.
The ply-board is there to stabilise the beautiful oak veneer and it is important to not only source your oak from sustainable sources, but to also ensure it is from a local region.
Improvements in modern technology mean almost all quality engineered boards are UV oiled, meaning the oil has been baked through UV rays, pushing it all the way through the wood, beyond just the surface.
